Things You Could Be Doing to Damage Your Skin

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, so it makes sense that you would want to take care of it. Most of us cleanse, moisturize and exfoliate, but sometimes this isn’t enough. If you’re doing any of these things on a regular basis, you may be contributing to damaging your skin. But the great news is, they’re all preventable!

1. Not drinking enough water

We’ve all heard by now that most adults have to drink up to 8 glasses of water a day, and one of the benefits drinking water has is that it keeps your skin hydrated. But here’s the catch: your body’s vital organs have first dibs on the water you drink, so it’s important to drink enough to get some to your skin as well. If you’re not drinking enough water, your skin will not only dry out, but it could look dull and grey. And, of course, wrinkles show more when your skin is dehydrated.

2. Using hot water to bathe and shower

Especially in the winter, there is nothing more relaxing than a long, hot shower. But hot water can do major damage to your skin and dry it out, as well.

3. Not using sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of your best defences against aging and damaged skin. You should always wear sunscreen, even on overcast days. You can also use moisturizer to protect yourself against wind, air conditioning and indoor heat.

4. Over-exfoliating

We love exfoliating, and the benefits for your skin are endless, removing dead skin cells. (Check out Allegra’s microdermabrasion for the ultimate exfoliating treatment! But always be careful that you are not over-exfoliating, as this can damage your skin and fine capillaries just below the surface. Gently exfoliating once a week is usually enough to keep your skin looking healthy and glowing!

5. Not removing makeup before bed

Let’s face it, we all have those days: we get home from work, we’re tired, and we just want to crawl straight into bed. Even on those days, it’s really important to remove your makeup before you go to sleep – and do it properly! A lot of makeup these days are made with long-lasting ingredients, so you need to cleanse a little deeper to really clean your pores.

Keep your skin looking its best and fight the onset of wrinkles!
